The modules give the learner the techniques to be able to write with an influential voice and to develop robust arguments with logic and cohesion.

Programme

Sessions for Strategic Language Skills

Recommended total number of lessons is 15 lessons (5 modules each of 3 lessons).

All 5 modules form a programme of 15 hours which gives the learner the ability to create persuasive written arguments. 

 

  • Practice in the skill of crafting a written text (such as a short summary, a long-form essay, a piece of descriptive text) which succeeds in communicating the writer's point of view with clarity and style. 

    The ability to take command of the written language and use it to either present information, express opinion or to engage a reader elevates the learner's opportunity to communicate and be understood.

    Module 1 - Advanced grammar review
    • Writing and speaking exercises under timed conditions
    • Comprehension tasks with an unfamiliar text

    Module 2 - Vocabulary
    • Creative writing tasks to develop a wide vocabulary
    • Word origins and meanings

    Module 3 - Essay writing
    • Practice in the structure of essay writing (or a long text)
    • Techniques to present the main topics with clarity
    • Synthesising ideas

    Module 4 - Copywriting
    • Practice in copy editing from long form to short form
    • Tasks for writing advertising copy
    • Practice in journalism

    Module 5 - Style
    • Literary Critical Analysis to discuss the style of the authors
    • Adding sophistication
    • Poetic devices
    • Exercises to practise change of style across a variety of writing tasks

Half-board homestay

Staying in a homestay gives participants the chance to be fully immersed into the local culture of the destination, whilst also being able to practise the language in a relaxed and natural setting. Many homestays have been welcoming our students into their homes for many years, offering their hospitality and expanding our students cultural horizons. Homestay arrivals are on the Sunday before the course begins, and departures are on the Saturday after the course ends.

A small university city, Oxford is easily navigable and students are quickly able to settle in and feel comfortable. The city has a bustling centre, with numerous shops, restaurants and cafes, as well as opportunities to explore the rich history and culture through museums, galleries and theatres. The centre of the city is also close to several parks and open spaces, allowing students to spend time outdoors and enjoying nature.
