Learning English is never isolated from its purpose in life: as a universal language it is at the heart of international communication. The core of OISE's philosophy is the distinction between mastering English and international communication. One is certainly a prerequisite but not a seamless route to the latter.
This distinction informs OISE's educational thinking: engagement with real life in English is the path to fluency and ultimately eloquence. To hone the scholar's international identity while polishing core competences.
The kernel of an OISE language education is its pedagogic architecture which encapsulates all the different facets of communicating in English: accuracy may be what most people learn first, but it is only useful when it leads to fluency and assertiveness.
Every course is full time and incorporates focus classes in grammar and vocabulary as well as fluency assertiveness workshops, presentation skills, pronunciation awareness, critical thinking skills in English.
The Spoken Assertiveness workshop develops the students’ oratory skills through practising pronunciation and performance in a forum of 8 speakers, imparting an authentic experience.
Restricted to 4 participants, the Critical Analysis workshop equips the student with the capacity to analyse and develop critical thinking skills.
Working together as well as individually, students deliver a weekly presentation to an audience. The preparation requires analysis, problem solving, research, planning and assertiveness and is an excellent opportunity to develop their bilingual identity through a creative approach.
Personal development activities are conducted using content which reflect current affairs, business, political, economic and philosophical issues of the moment; Participants acquire the concrete language tools to discuss, negotiate and present arguments with conviction in English.
Communicative activities vary according to their aims and therefore learning spaces are designed in each of the tuition centres to reflect the challenges set by each training session, for example a debating chamber designed to practice debates, a lecture theatre to train in public presentations, a study centre for research projects and break out areas for team work.
