About OISE Brasenose

The programme at Brasenose College allows students to immerse themselves in English in an educational environment that is emblematic of Oxford's intellectual wealth. Students learn through English in this 2 or 4 week programme as a means to reach their individual goals. Students receive intensive English language tuition, as well as subject study on a topic of their choice, inspired by the intellectual history of Oxford. The combination of English language study and subject study allows students to develop a broad range of abilities. The programme provides a unique insight into British University Life.

A truly international environment is fostered; learners study alongside other non-native speakers of varied backgrounds, allowing for development of language and of cross-cultural communication skills. The expanding of trans-cultural awareness is one of the great strengths and aims of the programme. In a safe and studious environment, learners experience a unique language study programme designed around their own interests, alongside fellow dedicated learners from different backgrounds, fostering a global perspective.

English Language Tuition

The OISE Oxford philosophy of total language immersion and experience of providing intensive courses have facilitated the development of this programme for ambitious students aged 14 to 17. The learning experience is structured to teach relevant vocabulary and expressions that will allow the young students to continue their personal development in English. The methodology of learning is one which allows learners to make reference to real-world situations. Students do not learn just the mechanics of the language, as they may already be excelling at English taught in school, but rather the know-how to apply their language knowledge to their everyday situations. The goal is to enable students to enhance their all-round communicative skills in English, including aspects that are hard to test such as confidence.

The Oxford College Experience Programme (30h/week)

This programme is the most rigorous of all OISE programmes, containing 30 hours of classes per week. English language classes are in groups of maximum 8 students, split according to ability to ensure individual needs and progress is at the heart of the programme. Language classes include 'text of the day' focus with individual research and discussion to ensure critical analysis and understanding. 'Writing skills' is a key focus of the English language course; students develop written ability in skills (e.g. paraphrasing), technical issues (e.g. proofreading) and formats relevant to their own needs, such as personal statement or CV writing, or University skills including essay writing and reviews.

In order to familiarise themselves with the characteristics of the careers that may be offered to them, students choose a subject for the week. Subject focus is taught in the afternoons, with students attending lectures, discussing case studies and developing collaborative projects on their topic of choice. Subject study is offered in:

- Diplomacy and International Relations
- Engineering
- Entrepreneurship
- Law
- Medicine (New in 2019)
- Politics, Philosophy, Economics

The minimum level to take this course is B2 (upper-intermediate). All students are interviewed prior to the course and complete an essay exercise. Students who do not meet the minimum criteria can take the Oxford College Experience Foundation Course, with a simplified curriculum and study Entrepreneurship and International Relations.
