My name is Olivia MacLean and I am the Course Leader here in Folkestone,
helping to run both the academic syllabus and extra curricular activities. I have worked for OISE for a number of years and now run the summer school
on an annual basis.
Here at Folkestone we have a long established set of fantastic teachers waiting to welcome you to our course…so, you might be asking yourself the question ‘Why should I go to Folkestone?’ Here are a few reasons why…
Folkestone is a lovely traditional seaside town with lots of charm and all the things you would hope to find on an English heritage coast – mile-long beaches, beautiful nature, gorgeous architecture, lots of history and of course fantastic fish & chips!
East Kent College is the perfect location for your summer school. It has lots of open space and leisure facilities but most importantly it has large, airy class rooms equipped with interactive whiteboards, computers and everything else you might need to help with your rigorous training programme. You will have access to a large library and of course WiFi. There is also a cafeteria which provides a selection of delicious lunch time meals.
Do you know the English expression ‘A change is as good as a rest’? Well, we know you work hard on the summer course so we think it is important to do some of that studying outside of the campus and have a change of scene. At Folkestone we love to get you out and about in the town to learn about your environment. You could be doing a special history project, doing a cultural treasure hunt, a questionnaire with local people…
There will be lots of interesting educational excursions on offer for Wednesday afternoons and Saturdays. These are linked to your syllabus and will give you the chance to explore more of England.
At Folkestone we are all about teamwork. The staff work very hard to provide you with exciting lessons that will really stretch your language skills. We want you to leave feeling confident and enjoying being able to communicate in English. There’s lots of time in the small classes for individual attention and you will have lots of opportunities to contribute your ideas and suggest topics to discuss and learn about as a group.
So, I hope this blog has answered a few of your questions about Folkestone! Our aim is to give you a fantastic learning experience and to leave having made progress in English but also with some new friends from around the world.
Have a look at our Facebook page and see what previous students say about OISE.
Myself and the team look forward to seeing you this summer!
