Finding the right language course for your needs is not an easy task. There are so many factors to take into account. You may need a course for a specific job, a presentation, you may have particular accommodation requests, have a specific group size in mind or simply want to be sure that the learning environment is friendly, authentic and hard working. This week I met the person who deals with these kinds of questions every day; the face behind the OISE phone number. As well as knowing all about the different OISE training centres, the various course options and highlights of the language locations, he has a very approachable character and is available by phone and email for all OISE customers.
Here he explains what is unique about OISE and points to some special features.
Tell me about your role: I’m Laurence and I run the booking office that handles all the enquiries about OISE courses that come through the website, social media and all other online channels. There are French, Spanish, German, Italian and Portuguese-speaking teams handling clients who communicate in those languages, and I deal with all other clients, using English to communicate, so it’s very diverse and it can be a challenge, but that’s what I love! My previous role focused on designing the user experience and content for the new website, and I wrote everything that is in English, so it’s great to have such a deep understanding of OISE’s online market as it informs what I do, and in return the feedback I have for the online marketing team informs their work too. The team is very international - I’m the only Englishman here - but we all speak two or three languages and get along very well so it’s a great environment to work in. Everyone here really understand what it’s like to learn another language, which I think is really important as we all deal in marketing and selling language acquisition.
Who is your typical client? My clients come from all over the world and often want to study English, French, German or Spanish for very different reasons, but I think they can be grouped into three types of learners:
Parents talk to me when their child has a need to learn another language, particularly if they don’t have the opportunity to practice it often at home or at school, and they are interested in a highly intensive language environment that can deliver reliable results in a short period of time such as the school holidays.
Students with ambitions for university in an English-speaking country or academics who need a very high level of language, often English, for writing theses and papers, come to OISE when other language coaching specialists fall short on providing the appropriate bespoke service.
Professionals come to me when they require a course that addresses their industry-specific language needs and want to strengthen their ability and performance in social settings such as meetings, interviews and presentations. Talking to clients over the phone really helps to tailor every aspect of the course to their requirements and allows me to explain the depths OISE tutors go to in order to bring about a transformation in the individual’s language ability.
What’s the most popular course? I’d say the Quatorial Combination is the most popular course across the board for students and professionals as the small group classes cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time whilst simulating the group dynamic often found in university seminars or workplace meetings. The one-to-one classes in the afternoon then really get to the bottom of any specific issues and offer the precision in approach required by students to iron out their individual language issues. The Quatorial Combination programme has the best of both group and one-to-one tuition.
Why do clients go to OISE? I find that language learners tend to go to OISE when they have a very specific language need, or they have a specific time frame they are available to study in, or they really need a challenging course that will push them and deliver results where other facilities have failed.
