This year, OISE Paris is proud to offer another exceptional two-week French course this summer for young learners between the age of 14 and 17. We met Florence, head of the programme, to find out more about this language course.
Can you give us a brief description of the main characteristics of this programme:
The most important part of the day for this course is the morning. It is composed of three hours of intensive lessons as well as a 1.5 hours of workshop as preparation of the afternoon. The lessons in the afternoon are based around group work and constructive activities. I have worked extensively with the two main teachers responsible for this programme to ensure there is a strong link between lessons and activities at all times. Throughout the course we give the students clear indicators of their progress as benchmarks and constant feedback, leading them securely to success at the end.
We have been implementing and developing this programme during the past few years and found it to be very successful. We have found that the student's motivation is highest during the morning, providing a good platform to work on vocabulary and grammar systematically which in turn functions as a foundation for the activities in the afternoon.
Teachers are involved in every step of the course, giving students the possibility to have constant feedback and allowing the teachers to continually adapt to the needs of the classes. This combination of trust and motivation means that the students learn very quickly and effectively on many levels.
Is the progress the students make during the two weeks visible?
Yes, on many levels! We measure progress particularly through the oral presentations which they prepare throughout the week and share at the end of the first and again the last week. These presentations are filmed as a reference for the students to be able to see their progress themselves and hear how they have improved concretely. More broadly we can observe that students experience a complete transformation during their stay. After only two weeks, they are no longer the same! New confidence and security in the French language is very noticeable in every student and that is a great thing to witness.
The teachers seem to play a key role in the success of this programme. Why are they and what is a typical profile?
There are always at least two highly trained and qualified teachers on the premises. This is one unique factor offered in this course. I ensure that all teachers give 100% of their energy and enthusiasm into the course, with particular attention to the pedagogical details, and OISE trademark.
During the recruitment process I paid particular attention to recruit motivated graduates and certified teachers with a range of educational experiences. For example, one teacher who will be working with us this summer has lived in several countries around the world travelling as a professor of French as a Foreign Language (FFL).
What are the main outstanding factors of this course?
Firstly we are a very small team at the school so the atmosphere is always friendly, like in a family. The maximum number of students we can accept is 16 in total, and per class there are never more than 8. This intimate group size means the teachers can get to know each student and focus on their particular needs. Of course, the teachers only speak French with the pupils throughout their stay, during lessons and the afternoon activities.
Secondly we do not see any student as a customer. Their aim is to focus on studying and improve their French, and it is our aim to make that happen. we strive to follow a rigorous educational teaching programme giving the students autonomy in their presentation, listening and speaking alike.
Finally each day ends with a short test to assess progress day-to-day and to set the tone for the following day of lessons.
Is a minimum level of French required for participation in this course?
Absolutely not. The groups are set according to level and age and we make sure to mix nationalities as much as possible, providing each student with an optimum learning environment.
This course will take place at OISE Paris from 15th - 28th July. For more information about the residence in Paris, afternoon activities and travel to and from the school, take a look at the detailed description here.
