Anastasia and Evgenii, 17 and 13, arrived from Russia (St Petersburg and Moscow respectively) to sharpen their English skills. Being familiar with language study elsewhere, we asked them what made them choose OISE this summer.
Anastasia explains that she had meetings with various EFL providers whilst in her home country. She was intrigued by OISE’s offerings and the consultant she met put real emphasis on the diverse range of opportunities offered by the summer programmes. The fluidity and flexibility of the courses greatly appealed to Anastasia, opting to use this as a chance to prepare for the Cambridge exams, for which OISE provides exclusive one-to-one tuition. Evgenii had heard through word of mouth that York was one of the best schools available and was allowed to come as he was already familiar with studying in the UK for both periods.
Two weeks into the programme, the students have had time to settle into their studies, make new friends and enjoy York, visiting the historical town and its attractions. Since then, their English skills have gradually improved, helped by the fact that the international group must communicate in their second language to get by. Their lessons have included a group project where the students had to create credible business plans accompanied by advertisements and marketing strategies and then present them in a Dragon’s Den styled pitching sessions. There’s plenty to do outside of the classroom too - the York school boasts exquisite tennis courts, football fields and a swimming pool, not to mention the chance to play chess, video games and other group activities to make sure not a single moment is wasted.
Most importantly, Anastasia is already feeling prepared to take her Cambridge exam and Evgenii tells us he is enjoying his interactions with the class and the teachers. Find out more about the types of courses York offers young learners here.
