What unique characteristics separate OISE courses from the crowd?
1. You’re forced to go beyond your comfort zone.
When on a journey to master another language, it would be easy to take solace in the company of those who speak the same language as yourself. OISE groups are mixed-national, so every moment of your residence is an opportunity to improve your English in a natural and spontaneous manner, even outside the classroom.
2. Classes are intensive, pushing you to succeed.
Depending on the program you choose, lessons start at a minimum of 22.5 hours a week to a maximum of 30 hours a week. You can opt for a programme of individual tuition for a coaching experience purely focussed on your goals, or join classes of 4 or 8 to excel as a group.
3. We’re never far away.
OISE staff stand ready to assist you in every moment of your stay, from arrival to departure. We’re approachable on any subject, from your development in class to your welfare as a scholar.
4. You learn to become more open, more accepting.
The courses are made up of young people from around the world, a unique opportunity to speak English and make new friends. We cannot overstate the positive changes that come with being open-minded to a world of difference. Speak to others unlike yourself. Learn to challenge others in a progressive way. Most of all, have fun expanding your horizons.
5. Fluency isn’t the goal - we’re aiming for mastery.
Grammar and vocabulary are important. But eloquence in English goes further than the words on the page. OISE scholars are put to the test. We place you in stimulating simulations of academic and professional scenarios, designed to boost your confidence and prepare yourself for the future. Each week, scholars select a theme (such as journalism, theater, business, politics, etc) and then delve into the different aspects of that theme. We want to ensure you are ready to present and debate in front of crowds, ready to answer questions at interview, ready to work in a team and as an individual.
6. This is the quickest way to prepare yourself for IELTS or the Cambridge exams (PET, FCE, CAE).
A certification of English is now indispensable to anyone who wishes to apply to an international University. Some OISE training centres offer the chance to tackle important prep examinations, such as the IELTS or the Cambridge exams (PET, FCE, CAE).
Need an explanation of those? Okay.
The IELTS is a "snapshot" of the participant's level of English: IELTS certification is valid for two years and is scored appropriately (Grades 1 to 9). It is therefore not an exam you can pass or not pass, but is a real assessment of current knowledge. This test can be retaken at a later date as you develop your skills, in order to prove your proficiency with English. IELTS is currently accepted by over 9,000 organisations worldwide and delivered on 2.2 million tests last year. This test is especially recommended to those who want to attend University in the United Kingdom.
The Cambridge exams certify a scholar’s level of general English within the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The Cambridge qualification never expires and serves as an international certificate of language skills, depending on the level achieved. Especially recommended for those attending the first years of high school.
The key difference is whether you want a permanent qualification reflecting your English proficiency or a measure of your current progress that can be expanded upon in the future. Find out which bests suits your goals - and let us ensure you reach them.
7. It’ll develop a bilingual future for young learners aged 7-13.
Aware of the importance of learning English from an early age, OISE has created two colleges dedicated to children, where 24-hour supervision is guaranteed and lessons and activities are geared towards our youngest learners. The language course is ideal for a first experience abroad.
8. Why stop at English?
No, seriously, why stop there? There are study trips to France (Paris), Germany (Heidelberg) and Spanish (Segovia and Madrid). You never know, you might find that you have an affinity for the romantic languages too. Learning to communicate widely and confidently will change your life for the better. OISE looks forward to helping you develop a confident and eloquent approach to language scholarship that will accompany you wherever you go in the future.
