Hello and a warm welcome from OISE Taunton
! My name is Amanda and I am the Course Leader for the OISE Taunton programme. I have worked for a number of years for OISE in various locations but
Taunton is where I first began my journey with OISE as a teacher and where I have now returned to. I believe OISE Taunton is a special place where
students can enjoy a home away from home. Taunton is a dedicated centre for 7-12 year olds, our students are able to enjoy a course and activities
dedicated to the interests and requirements of their age group. They are safe and well supervised. Students and teachers who come to Taunton particularly
enjoy the location. As the school is in the countryside we are surrounded by nature and frequently spot rabbits, cows and horses nearby. This all
gives Taunton a peaceful feel and there is lots of outside space for our students to run around and enjoy sports and games after and between lesson
times, British weather depending of course!
As a smaller school, myself and the teachers and leisure staff are able to devote time to every student and we always know all of their names. Everyone knows who is who here.In the classroom our 8 student maximum class size ensures teachers help every class member individually so that everyone understands and gets the most from the lesson. During leisure time we get everyone joining in and our Leisure Leader creates a great mix of activities and team games so that everyone can make friends. Having a mix of students of different nationalities here provides students with the opportunity to continue using their English outside of the classroom to communicate.Even if a teacher can speak the student’s language they will always encourage the student to try to express themselves in English.
Trips off-site are always lots of fun, for all of us! There is always a big buzz of excitement in the mornings on trip days. We always find that the students really like the shopping trips and it is a great experience for the children to be using a different currency. It’s also lovely to see the children, even the ones who’ve come to us with less knowledge of the language, using their English with the locals when we are out on these trips.
As well as being Course Leader I also take care of the academic programme at Taunton. As a teacher myself I really enjoy seeing all the students here get the most academically during their time with us. It is great to see the students with less experience of English become more confident and also to see even the students with a higher level of English learn to use the language in a more natural way. Our teachers have come to Taunton with such a diverse range of experience and have worked with students of so many different nationalities that they really do have a great array of creative tips and tricks to help our students learning.
At the end of each course it is always sad to say goodbye but many students make friends and meet up with each other again the next year at OISE Taunton or another of our schools for the older students. It’s always a lovely surprise to see a student’s name on my student list who I remember from a previous year and meet them again!
I am really looking forward to welcoming new and returning students to OISE Taunton in 2018!
