The school at Badminton is over 150 years old and is internationally renowned. It has hosted OISE Young Learner courses for many years. Located just to the north of Bristol, students will find the local shops of Westbury-on-Trym a short walk away, and Bristol itself is served by regular buses.
The Badminton School is the longest running OISE summer centre. Set in lavish gardens just outside Bristol, the school is a favourite for many returning students. Its location and feel encourages a close-knit and supportive atmosphere among both students and tutors.
The Badminton school is an active one. Due to its surrounding facilities and structure, a more fluid approach to the classroom is encouraged. Students are able to take advantage of the great hall, with its theatre stage in frequent use for both presentations and plays; results of weekly creative projects.
Many of our tutors and senior staff return year on year, creating a strong team of experienced tutors.
The Intensive Summer Curriculum is a full time course of 27 hours of tuition per week, with a maximum of 8 students per class. The course aims to develop both an intellectual as well as a social understanding.
OISE deliver a full day of learning which focuses on language, academic literacy, subject literacy and social and cultural fluency. Lessons generally follow a topic throughout the day, flowing seamlessly from grammar and vocabulary to more productive and creative tasks in the afternoons.
The Cambridge Exam Preparation also covers 27 hours of tuition per week, with a maximum of 8 students per class but focuses on First (FCE) and Advanced (CAE) Certificate training. The course is fast paced and uses a range of stimulating teaching techniques to engage students and familiarise them with the exam. Concentrating on the five skills tested in the exam: listening, reading, writing, speaking and use of English, the course covers each area in depth. Authentic past papers are used to simulate the exam situation and familiarise students with managing time constraints.
The school has excellent sports facilities including a heated swimming pool, an indoor sports hall and tennis courts. As well as sport, other activities available include jewellery making, decorative painting, quizzes, casino nights, film and games nights, talent shows and discos. Weekends offer full-day excursions to London, Oxford or Cardiff, and local excursions to Bath, Bristol city centre or Bristol Zoo.
